dollarpets.com Safety Reminder
When treating your pet to rawhide treats, you should always supervise your dog until you are comfortable with their chewing habits. If your dog likes to chew off large pieces of rawhide, then try to swallow it, trim off the large softened pieces so it does not get caught in your dog's throat. If you are not familiar with your dog's chewing habits, you are better off starting with a harder rawhide such as the pressed bone then advancing to a softer bone. We highly recommend that you read the signs and steps you should take if your pet is choking. By taking just a few minutes of your time to read choking precautions and measurements, you could very well save your pets life!

First off, how can you tell if your pet is choking? Here are some of the signs:

  • pet looks like, or is trying to throw up
  • gagging
  • gaping mouth ( mouth that is open for a long period of time )
  • abnormal drooling
  • any combination of the above

What to do:

  • Wedge a screwdriver handle or small paperback into the side of the animals mouth to try and keep it open.
  • If you feel comfortable with it, you can first administer the Heimlich maneuver. Administer this process the same as you would for a human. Do not be too rough, but it will work for dogs as well as humans. Be especially careful when using this technique with very small animals. Remember, their little bodies cannot handle the extreme pressure that a larger animal could endure.
  • If the Heimlich maneuver does not work, take a flashlight and look into the animals mouth. If you can see the object, take long-nosed pliers, tweezers, or your fingers and pull out the object that the animal is choking on.

At dollarpets.com, our very own pets are members of our family and are treated as such. We would rather not sell you a product than risk your pet's health. So please make sure you are very familiar with the chewing habbit of your pets.
